Roland Barthes came up with 5 different codes with could be identified within a narrative. These are:
* Enigma - setting up a puzzle
* Action - one visual code leading to the next, when visuals link with the audio
* Semic - connotation
* Symbolic - binary opposition (not what it is referring to)
* Cultural - audience knowledge/ ideology
