Below is my analysis of generic conventions in my AS production in comparison to a real film. We compared these in order to see how much my film really linked in with the typical "thriller" convention.

'Pieces' lyrics
You don't care, About me, Anymore,
Thats why you, you wanna break my heart,
Into pieces on the floor. [x2]
You don't care, About me, Anymore,
Thats why you, you wanna break my heart.
I remember when i used to feel sutin, i remember when i used to feel sutin.
I remember when i used to feel sutin, i remember when i used to feel sutin.
I remember when i used to feel sutin, i remember when i used to feel sutin.
I remember when i used to feel sutin, now-o-ow-o-ow i'm just cold inside. [x2]
I remember when i used to feel sutin, now-o-ow-o-ow i'm just cold inside.
I remember when i used to feel sutin, now-w-w-w i'm just cold inside.
If you don't care, About me, Anymore,
Why do you, you wanna break my heart,
Into pieces on the floor.
You don't care, About me, Anymore,
Thats why you, you wanna break my heart...
I remember when i used to feel sutin, now-o-ow-ow i'm just cold inside.

Final Song Choice
Myself and my partner in the end decided we would do a song by both Chase & Status and Plan B called 'Pieces'. We liked the way there was a clear vocal part focusing on the singing, then changing into a much more uptempo rhythm and beat engaging the audiences of both Plan B and Chase & Status. Below is the video for our final choice:
Final 4 Artists
After much consideration, we have narrowed our artist choice down to 4 artists. These are Chase and Status, Katy B, Delilah and Plan b. Below are some songs by these artists to give a taster of the kind of style we are going for:
Audience Theory
Hypodermic Needle Theory
* Created in the 1920's
* Everyone receives texts in the same way
* Audience = passive
Culmination Theory
* Similar to hypodermic needle theory
* Suggests influencing takes place over years, not instantly
Two Step Flow
* The text is filtered through opinion leaders
* The audience will receive the texts with the opinion leaders bias
Uses and Gratifications
* Created in the 1060's
* Audience consume in different ways for their own benefit
* Uses include surveillance, correlation, entertainment and cultural transmission
Obstinate Audience Theory/ Reception Analysis
* Similar to Uses and Gratifications
* There is a transactional communication between audience and media
* Audience help themselves put meaning to the text
* The audience selects which message to absorb
Reception Theory:
* By using expected conventions producers can place audiences where they like
* This is known as preferred reading

Class Discussion: artists that relate to pink
During our class discussion, we watched and analysed Pink's video "fucking perfect" uses the narrative to engage the audience. Below is the video to the track:
Narrative
* She is reflecting her own childhood
* Pink herself was her audience at that age
* The teddy bear connotes the inner girl, childhood
* The narrative does not come as a surprise as their is consistency through-out all her videos with a similar narrative outcome.
Engaging Audience
* The audience can relate to her and the events that go on in the video
* Parts of the video are hard hitting, such as when she is self harming
* There is the shock factor
* Sex scene at the beginning - may be unexpected?
Our task was then to choose another video of our choice that could relate to Pink and her style of videos. I chose Christina Aguilera's song, 'Hurt'. The videos is below:
Narrative
* Looking back on her childhood in contrast with present day
* Necklace is shown both in the clips from her childhood then when she's older
* Narrative is about losing someone you have lost in your life, in this case her father
Engaging Audience
* Interesting activities going on in the narrative as it is based in a circus
* Audience can very much relate to what Christina Aguilera is singing about
I feel that the thing that links both these videos the most is that they are both written so that the audience can relate to the narrative, whether it be for being bullied or losing someone you love.

Radar Love: Final Product
After planning and filming our production of Radar Love by Golden Earring we have finished. Below is out final product:
Radar Love: chosen bandmates
Once we have figured out which instruments are included therefore how many people would be needed, we chose who we would want to be involved in our short music video to Radar Love. In the end we chose:

Molly on drums (top left)
Gemma on bass guitar (top right)
Chloe on tambourine (bottom left)
David on vocals and electric guitar (bottom right)

Radar Love: screenshots
Before doing the final shoot for our music video, I watched the Golden Earring version of the video and picked out various different shots that I thought were effective and screen shot them so I could include them in the blog. A reason for liking these shots is because they, in one way or another, keep the audience interested by offering a bit more variety as opposed to just sticking to one boring shot of the band as a whole.
Radar Love: Storyboard
Once myself and my partner had worked out which musical instruments were involved and what kind of outcome we want, we created a storyboard of which we followed when creating our video. Below are screen shot of our storyboard.
30 second mini task
As a practise/ starter task, everyone has been given the song "Radar Love" by Golden Earring and been told to create a short 30 second music video to. Below is the original video:
Research into music videos: Ed Sheeran
Myself and my partner liked the simplicity of Ed Sheeran and the "its all about the music" approach he takes to his own tracks. The video to "Small Bump" shows this exactly, by the way it is an acoustic track with just a performance through-out of him sitting on a narrow boat being filmed from one angle singing. Below is the video:
Research into music videos: Katy B
Katy B is another artist we are interested in. This is because we feel she has strong vocals as well as a good backing song. She creates music in a variety of genres such as R&B, house, garage and dub-step. Right from the beginning we wanted to choose a video that could include both a performance part with a performer and audience as well as a narrative, so felt various Katy B tracks may be able to fit this well. Another song by Katy B is shown below:
Research into music videos: Black Eyed Peas
This video shown below was not necessarily a song we would like to do for our final music video, but we liked the different edits the video included. Below is the video itself then a few screenshots of edits used.
Research into music video: Delilah
One of the artists myself and my partner thought about potentially doing was a song by Delilah. This was because her vocals are amazing and we could create a narrative that captured the audience' attention well, although it may have been fairly difficult to make a narrative different enough from the original music video. We also liked the fact Delilah included both narrative and performance in her videos, featuring herself in both of the ones shown which some artists choose not to do. Below are a couple of her songs that we thought of doing:
Barthes Code - "Louder"
Barthes code of 'semic' could be shown in DJ Fresh's music video 'louder', shown below.
Genre: Dub-Step
Sub-Genre: Narrative
Barthes Code: Semic
Explanation: An example of Barthes Code 'Semic' is shown in DJ Fresh's music video is the characters used in the video in order to reflect the song. Included is young, upbeat, healthy people taking part in various sports and dancing and the people included are perhaps the kind of people who would listen to the song. Action could also be shown in the video as when the lyrics say "I wanna go faster" you see the two roller skaters move their legs faster as if to gain speed.

Barthes Code - "All of the Lights"
My first analysis is of Kanye West's song 'All of the Lights'. The music video is shown below:
Genre: Hip Hop
Sub-genre: Narrative, Performance (hybrid)
Barthes Code: Enigma, Semic, Action
Explanation: An example of Barthes Code 'enigma' is shown when the little girl at the beginning is shown walking while the audience does not know the purpose of this but later find out it is to represent Kanye West's daughter. Barthes Code of 'action' shown through-out the music video, while the lyrics of the chorus are shown on the screen in time with the music, as well as various visuals linking with the lyrics. For example it says "she call the feds" while showing a clip of a woman on the phone and "i'm heading home, i'm almost there" showing the camera approaching a front door of a house.

Barthes Code
Roland Barthes came up with 5 different codes with could be identified within a narrative. These are:
* Enigma - setting up a puzzle
* Action - one visual code leading to the next, when visuals link with the audio
* Semic - connotation
* Symbolic - binary opposition (not what it is referring to)
* Cultural - audience knowledge/ ideology

Michael Jackson Vs Alien Ant Farm
The next analysis task was comparing Michael Jackson's version of 'smooth criminal' in contrast with Alien Ant Farms version. The first analysis is of Micheal Jackson's version.
How well balanced is the narrative and performance within smooth criminal?
Through-out the whole of the Michael Jackson Video, there is a constant balance between the narrative and the performance. There is always a narrative going on with MJ as the main character but he is performing in the video as well.
Is there any homages in Michael Jackson's smooth criminal?
In the MJ video of 'smooth criminal' there is an homage to the 1920's gangster era.
How successful was the tempo interpreted for the audience' needs?
I feel that MJ was very successful with meeting audience' needs. They got what they expected - a theatrical style video with his typical style music.
How well balanced is the narrative and performance?
Similarly to the M.J version of the song, there was a constant performance through-out the video but only a slight narrative, showing reference to Micheal Jackson.
What intertexuality references does Alien Ant Farm create?
During the whole video, there is constant reference to MJ's version of Smooth Criminal as well as Micheal Jackson as a person. Things such as the moonwalk are included, the white mask, the pavements lighting up, the glass smashing. This could not really be seen as an homage due to the fact it appears to be taking the mick out of Micheal Jackson so would more likely be seen as a pastiche.
How successful was the tempo interpreted for the audiences needs?
Due to the "wildness" of the video and the rebellious appearance, as well as the style of song I would say the tempo was fairly successful in interpreting their niche audiences needs.
